What is Yoga?
Yoga, derived from the Sankrit word “yuj” which means to unite and integrate, is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which, including breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures, is widely practised for health and relaxation. Yoga is all about harmonizing the body with the mind – the mind-body connection.
Types of Yoga
Anusara
What is: often described as Iyengar (a purist form of yoga) with a sense of humour
Ashtanga
What is: Six established and strenuous pose sequences, practiced sequentially as progress is made. Considered a form of power yoga, Ashtanga is fast-paced and intense with lunges and push-ups.
Bikram
What is: Also known as hot yoga, Bikram is practiced in a 95 to 100 degree room. It’s typically a series of 26 poses. Each performed twice, that allows for a loosening of tight muscles and sweating.
Hatha
What is: Hatha originated in India in the 15th century and is slow-paced, gentle, and focused on breathing and meditation. One of the six original branches of yoga.
Iyengar
What is: Iyengar covers all eight aspects of Ashtanga yoga and focuses on bodily alignment. Different props like straps, blankets, and blocks are used to assist in strengthening the body. Standing poses are emphasized, and are often held for long periods of time.
Jivamukti
What is: Jivamukti is a physical, edge-pushing practice that reintegrates yoga’s traditional spiritual elements. Expect a theme for each class, Sanskrit chanting, and references to ancient scripture.
Kripalu
What is: Kripalu is a three-part practice that teaches you to get to know, accept and learn from your body.
Kundalini
What is: Kundalini involves constantly moving, invigorating poses and the fluidity of the practice is intended to release the kundalini (serpent) energy in your body.
Laughter Yoga
What is: An exercise routine, combining laughter with yoga.
Power
What is: An active and athletic style of yoga adapted from the traditional Ashtanga system.
Prenatal
What is: Prenatal yoga is tailored to help women in all stages of pregnancy.
Restorative
What is: Restorative Yoga focuses in just four or five simple poses, spending as much as 20 minutes each.
Sivananda
What is: An unhurried yoga practice typically of the same 12 basic asanas or variations therof.
Viniyoga
What is: Variety of Hatha yoga that emphasizes on the Sun Salutation, a series of 12 poses where movement is matched to the breath.
Yin
What is: A quiet, meditative yoga practice, also called taoist yoga.
